This castle
is located near Tuchan in Aude. It is 321m above sea
level.
The first castle on
the site was built around 1021. The present donjon was built
in the 12th century with curtain walls added in the subsequent
century.
Simon de Montfort
took the castle in 1210 and threw the castle's lord, Raymond of Ternes
into a dungeon in Carcassonne. Raymond's son, Oliver de Ternes
retook the fortress during a revolt around 1240. In 1246 it was
taken by the French king and garrisoned to hold the nearby border with
Aragon.
